The general process of mold design and drawing


One: Organize and inspect customer information


(1) Detailed customer information


1. 3D and 2D drawing files or drawings of plastic parts.


2. Plastic part materials and their shrinkage rates.


3. Appearance requirements and precision requirements for plastic parts


4. Assembly requirements for plastic parts and important assembly dimensions.


5. Requirements for injection molding conditions of plastic parts.


6. Production batch of plastic parts, production cycle, injection molding machines used and other special requirements, etc.

After receiving the design task and the customer's plastic part information, the person in charge of mold design should follow the mold design requirements, truthfully and thoroughly convey the information and requirements to each mold designer, and then the mold designers will respectively sort out and digest the customer information.

(2) Organize the content


1. If the customer data is in 3D form such as IGES or IDEAS, convert it to UG or Pro/E physical form and repair any damaged surfaces.


2. If the materials provided by the customer are 2D graphic files or drawings, they should be drawn as UG or Pro/E graphic files as required.


(3) Check the content


1. The direction of the mold parting line and the position of the clamping line left on the plastic part must be approved by the customer if it affects the appearance.


2. Whether there are any areas in the plastic part that are prone to injection molding defects, such as shrinkage depressions, flash, and charring, and whether there are any design defects in the plastic part that make mold making difficult or even impossible to process, such as upside-down or insufficient space. If any, improvements must be made.


3. Lateral core-pulling, inclined top position and wire clamping. If they affect the appearance, the customer's consent is required.


4. The dimensions of the mutual fit between plastic parts (such as front and rear covers) should determine the tolerance of the mold dimensions.


5. Whether the draft Angle is indicated in the plastic part drawing and whether it is sufficient (special attention should be paid to transparent plastic parts, etched surfaces and.

6. For the plastic parts with fonts, confirm the font form, content, position and size (pay special attention to recessed characters).

After the inspection is completed, each designer should prepare the above inspection contents into a "Plastic Part (Product) Inspection Form" (DWG or PDF document) and hand it over to the design team leader for summary. Then, the design team leader should hand it over to the mold manager to send an email or fax to the customer for inspection and modification confirmation.

(4) Modify the plastic parts and determine the plan


1.Once the inspection content is confirmed by the customer or the new drawing file after the customer's inspection is received, the plastic part modification work can be initiated according to the requirements of mold design and production.


2.The modified contents include changing the draft Angle, modifying the inverted structure, and rationalizing the wall thickness, etc.


3. The modified plastic parts generally need to be submitted by the mold manager to the customer for confirmation.


4. If necessary, the mold supervisor should convene a meeting with the design team leader and all designers to discuss and formulate detailed plans for mold production

Two: Drawing of mold drawings


The modified plastic part will have its 3D mold drawing made by the designers.

Once the design task is assigned, the mold supervisor will immediately instruct relevant engineers to formulate the "Mold Production Plan" as per the customer's requirements and determine and notify each designer within the shortest possible time.


3. The "Mold Production Plan" serves as the essential reference for mold design and manufacturing. Designers must keep an eye on its version updates at all times and respond promptly.


At the beginning of the project, the mold design team leader needs to fill out the "Mold Design Plan" according to the specific situation, then report it to the mold manager, and have the PC (Production Control) engineer formulate the formal "Mold Design Plan" and issue it to each mold designer.


5. The "Mold Design Plan" serves as the time basis for mold design and production and is an important document to ensure the progress of mold making. Once the design plan is issued, all designers must complete the drawing within the time limit specified in the plan. No extension is allowed without special circumstances.


6. All designers should keep an eye on the updates of plastic parts at all times to ensure that the designed mold products are the latest version. If any problems are found, they should be promptly reported to the team leader or the person in charge of the mold.


7. If the customer has special technical requirements for the mold, the design should be carried out in accordance with their requirements as appropriate. The design content must be confirmed by the customer before formal production can commence.
